The Bulls were bowled out in 70 overs by St Michaels, but the Englishman has faith in his bowling attack.
He believes Saints captain-coach Ryan Forsyth and star batsmen Michael Mitchell hold the key to the match.
They are expected to be the next two men in when St Michaels resume on 1-11 after seven overs late on day one.
“We took an early wicket but know that we have to get Forsyth and Mitchell out cheaply,” Smeeth said.
“If either of those guys bat a full day they will have a pretty good chance of winning, but we just have to keep the pressure on.
“The pitch is pretty slow so we definitely feel we can defend that.”
Smeeth removed Eric Koetz (3) late on day to help their chances of remaining on top of the ladder.
After being 2-100, Smeeth was frustrated his team couldn’t reach 250 but they were helped by some strong hitting by Scott Billington.
