At just 23-year-old Brett Hull saw himself take on ownership of one of Wagga’s premier smash repair businesses, Graeme Hull Smash Repairs.
Fresh out of his panel-beating apprenticeship he started running the business the same way his father Graeme did, with limited experience but a good work ethic and attitude.
Graeme Hull established the business 40 years ago after taking on the car smash repairs department of Hartwigs trucks.
Graeme worked for Hartwigs in spare parts and was offered the business provided he took on all the staff.
Almost overnight Graeme went from an employee to a business owner with more than 20 staff.
He ran the business with his wife Kay until 1990 when Brett’s older brother, Darren, took over and ran it for 10 years before retiring from the business.
Today Brett runs the business with his wife Chloe while his nephew (Darren’s son), Nick Hull, is learning the ropes of management.
After taking over in 2000 Brett started looking at expansion and moved the business to Norton Street in 2007 after the original premises on Edward Street became too small to accomodate the quickly-growing business.
This growth wouldn’t have been possible without the staff and community getting behind them.
“Our success throughout the years could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of our staff and the support of the entire community, who we wish to thank greatly,” Brett said.
The expansion hasn’t stopped with more staff always needed to join the ranks to cater to the high demand.
Many staff who were in the business originally have now retired and the focus is on training young staff to address the shortage being felt within the industry.
“We’re focused on getting people into the industry,” Brett said.
