The 21-year-old Wagga man was visiting the Great Lakes region in NSW and was walking along the beach for an early morning fish when he came across the shark.
“It looked like it had been attacked,” Wilson said.
The shark – believed to be a grey nurse – had several deep wounds to its body and some large bite-type marks, indicating it had been attacked by a much larger creature.
The beached animal was the first time the keen angler had seen a shark either on the beach or in the water.
“I thought it was a great white at first.”
His dad, Gavin, later confirmed it was a grey nurse shark.
By the time Wilson and his mates had finished their fishing two hours later the shark had gone –possibly taken back into the ocean by the incoming tide.
Wilson and his family are regulars to the Great Lakes region.
