Turvey Park firefighters were called to a home on Mima Street after 6am, to find the kitchen alight.
Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Justin Bentley said it was fortunate the flames had got into the roof cavity and burst a water pipe.
“By the time crews go there it was pretty well self-extinguished,” Mr Bentley said. “We just made sure it was out, mobbed it up and made it safe.”
He said it was a timely reminder to keep looking when cooking.
Mr Bentley said leaving cooking unattended was the cause of many house fires they attended.
“Make sure you’re in the right state of mind to cook too,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse.”
