Superintendent Bob Noble said Wagga detectives are taking the matter “extremely seriously”.
“The device as it turned out was determined by the bomb squad to be inert,” Superintendent Noble said.
“It certainly was fashioned in such a way to mimic and resemble a live device and to that end it was no doubt designed to cause fear.”
The items seized, described as alcohol bottles, wires and batteries taped together, were subjected to a preliminary forensic examination and are now being further tested in search of fingerprints or DNA traces.
“If there’s anything on those devices, we’ll find it,” Superintendent Noble said.
“It’s not the first such instance across the city in recent times, we’ve certainly had a live device that was disarmed at bus stop in the city not too long ago.
“They’re very serious incidents… we’re focused on determining who was responsible and putting them before the court.”
Police believe the device was left in the Prime7News lane way off Gurwood Street sometime on the evening of Monday, January 8.
They are seeking to identify between two and four juveniles sighted in the area.
