For those out of the loop, local comedians Dane Simpson and Jamie Way cooked up a spicy new video last Sunday that tackles the notion of Terra Nullius – “land belonging to nobody” – over a few pizzas.
Wondering why it’s such a hit? Watch and see for yourselves.
Since being posted at 7.30pm on Monday, January 16, the video has received more than 11,000 views and has been shared more than 270 times on Facebook.
Though the humour is lighthearted, the timing of the message is a clear statement.
“I wrote the sketch a little while ago with Rahj Jordan and we said we need to get this out right now when people have Australia Day on the mind,” Mr Simpson said.
“Some people feel very strongly about Australia Day and changing the date but they feel it hard to express themselves.
“By putting a video together that’s a little on the funny side, people can watch and just say yeah, that’s how I feel or make up their own minds.”
However, Wagga City Council mayor Greg Conkey will not be supporting or pushing for a date change for Australia Day celebrations this year.
Cr Conkey said he supported retaining celebrations on January 26 because it was symbolic for all residents.
“It’s a day to celebrate all that’s good about this country and there’s plenty to celebrate, but it’s also a day of reflection,” he said.
“I believe it’s a day to think back on the past and how the original inhabitants of this land were treated by past generations.”
The mayor said it was important to learn from history and recognise the significance of January 26 in unity.
“I believe the date should remain because it encompasses everybody and I certainly don’t see it as an Invasion Day but as a day to reflect and to also celebrate all that is good in this country,” he said.
