Dana Corporal was a $1.50 fixed odds favourite in the first of the Ladbrokes Monthly Medal Stakes event (320m) but drifted to $2 on the tote. Punters’ hearts were in mouths when it blew the start horribly, only to eat up the metres on the bend and get home by half-a-length, from kennel mate Dana Mezza, in 18.81 seconds.
Dana Corporal had always impressed the trainer until he cracked a knee cap.
“He’s just a week to week proposition now, you’ve just got to keep him in the sprints and can’t do much with him,” McDonald said.
The dog had four straight wins and a second last month and has now won eight of 24 starts.
McDonald just missed the trifecta with Dana Makin finishing fourth.
It was the start of a winning treble for McDonald, a week after he claimed a double at the Wagga club’s New Year’s meeting.
Garcia won the Ladbrokes Odds Boost event (400m) – just his second win in 27 races – while Dane Kazza ($10.90) claimed a fifth career win, and a third victory for McDonald on the night, taking out another Ladbrokes Monthly Medal Stakes (320m) in race 10.
McDonald also finished with three minor placings at the meeting.
