It comes after the latest sampling results from testing conducted on Monday 18 December displayed a high reading for blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in parts of the lake.

In a statement, acting manager for environment and city compliance Sharomi Dayanand cautioned residents that all contact with water from the lake should be avoided. 

“Council advises the community that people and domestic animals should not come into contact with water from the lake,” she said.

“Pets are particularly at risk from the algae, especially dogs.”

Blue-green algae can appear as specking, suspended clumps or as algal scums which take the form of green or yellow discoloured slicks on the water surface.

Blue-green algae can also cause skin and eye irritations, sore throats or gastroenteritis in humans.

Ms Dayanand said particular care should be taken around where blooms are visible and odorous. 

“Many factors can contribute to higher blue-green algae levels,” she said.

“Council staff have been closely monitoring the lake during summer and the recent dry and very hot weather would be the likely cause.”

The reading throws a spanner into preparations for the inaugural Wagga Skyworks, however, event coordinator Lisa Cameron is confident the night will remains largely unaffected.

“The algae won’t have any impact on our fireworks as they will be fired from pontoons,” she said.

“However, the reading may well impact our plans for water sports and other elements of the event.”

Ms Cameron and Ms Dayanand said council was continuing to liaise with event staff and the boat club to determine any contingencies.

“Lake Albert is a popular recreation area, particularly at this time of year, and we will take more samples as soon as possible,” Ms Dayanand said. 

Two tests results at a medium or lower reading are required before the high level can be downgraded.

Additional samples have been sent to the laboratory and further tests will be undertaken on 2 January.
