It marked Stewart’s third consecutive Madison win, while Tolland young gun Jake Brooker and Albury talent Steve Kilpatrick ran in second.

But the event was far less to kind to Treloar, who suffered a concussion and possible broken ribs.

Stewart said it did not feel right to win after a crash which horrified everyone in attendance.

“It probably did take bit of shine off the win because they were our main competitors and the race was pretty close when the crash happened,” he said.

“It just wasn’t as much of a challenge once those guys were out of it.”

But Stewart, understandably, was still pleased to win the epic 100 lap race for the third consecutive year.

“It was still good to get the win for sure,” he said.

“Brodie was really good too, he put in a lot of effort and really stepped up.”

Meanwhile a battered and bruised Treloar, who was paired with elite Victorian veteran Todd Wilksch, was already back at work and in good spirits the morning after the race.

But he is dealing with the vivid memories of the crash.

“In the moment it was one of things where you know what’s about to happen and all you can hope for is minimal damage,” Treloar said.

“Unfortunately it turned out to be the most painful crash I’ve ever experienced.

“It was frustrating because we were going very well and at that stage I was very confident that we’d win.”

Also performing well was Steve McMullan and Jordan Matthews, the duo taking out the B-grade Madison earlier in the night.

Rebel Brooker and Lara Batkin finished second.

Wagga Cycling Club publicity officer Cameron Oke said the night had its highs and lows.

“What with the hot weather and the crash, the cycling gods definitely weren’t with us last night,” he said.

“But considering the hand we were dealt, I thought we put on a wonderful spectacle for the crowd.

“The crowd was great.”
