NSW Rural Fire Service operations officer Brad Stewart warned residents to not become complacent as temperatures continued to rise across the region. 

It comes after a freak weather event in early December brought more than 100mm of rain to some localised areas.

With a predicted high of 35 degrees and 50km-per-hour wind gusts on Thursday, Mr Stewart said bush fires were a possibility. 

“There is a bit of green across the countryside with the rain we’ve had,” Mr Stewart said.

“There is still enough dead grass and wood that could burn … we don’t want people to relax.”

He said if anything, rain could create problems for brigades, as they attempted to access fires on muddy ground. 

“A fire can occur in an area we can’t get to because of the water in the soil,” Mr Stewart said. 

“We saw this happen just the other day, near the Hume Weir.”

He said there were no serious concerns, but with summer just starting and holidays coming up, he urged residents to make sure their home was well protected. 

“Stay up to date with the fires near me app,” Mr Stewart said.

“If you see an unattended fire call triple zero.”
