The four-year-old Graduate Certificate in Wiradjuri Language, Culture and Heritage was praised on Monday, following the graduation of 11 students.
The certificate delivers a unique insight and knowledge about one of Australia’s many Aboriginal nations, using a dictionary created by Uncle Dr Stan Grant Senior and Dr John Rudder.
Uncle Stan, who attended the first graduation ceremony at CSU Wagga on Monday, said students could now go on and teach the language and culture to others.
Vice-chancellor Andrew Vann said the course was a great example of bringing tradition back from the brink.
“We now have a cohort of people who can speak Wiradjuri and are learned deeply about the culture,” Professor Vann said. “We need that culture to be strong.”
