Gundagai police detected a Toyota Vienta allegedly travelling at 170km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Hume Highway at Mundarlo on Tuesday.
The car was stopped and police reported seeing the driver’s pregnant wife in the front seat, and an unrestrained one-year-old in the back.
Police say as they were dealing with the driver he lit a cigarette and started smoking within the vehicle with the child still present.
The driver was “promptly educated” and issued with a number of infringements in relation to his speed, smoking within the vehicle with a child under 16-years-old still present, having an unrestrained baby in the vehicle, and not complying with his licence conditions.
The driver’s right to drive in NSW was suspended on the spot for six months.
Police organised safe travel for the family to Gundagai where they were to arrange alternate travel plans.
