The Rock Central School year 10 student, Toni Richards, 15, submitted a painting of a classic car in the Operation Art State Competition, known as Art Express. This judging process allowed the painting to be selected as one of the best. And the finest artworks are then chosen to go on show at the Westmead Children’s Hospital as well as the Art Gallery of NSW.
Supported by visual arts teacher Gavin Price-Jones Miss Richards said she really enjoyed art classes.
And her love for art was something that she picked up from her grandmother Edith Richards of Wagga. Her father’s interest in classic cars, like the one in the picture, gave her something fitting to paint.
She said the car in the picture was similar to one her dad Gavin Richards owned. “Art is therapeutic,” she said. Miss Richards will finish up at The Rock this year before heading to Wagga High next year for Year 11. “Toni is a good art student and has a naturally expressive way of working,” Mr Price-Jones said.
“It is great that students can be recognised for their creative exploits. And art is an ideal opportunity for students to express themselves,” he said. Mr Price-Jones said art was a popular elective among students at The Rock.
