Following an extensive weeding program and a book sale, there was lots of room for two new special collections: the Community Languages Collection and the Junior Non-fiction Hot Picks.
The new Community Languages Collection, contains 2630 adult and children’s books in 12 different languages: Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Serbian, Croatian, Sinhalese, Persian, Tamil, Hindu, Burmese and Indonesian. You will find these books housed on Level One near the resources for English as a Second Language.
The collection is on permanent loan from the State Library of NSW for the next 12 months. At the end of the year the books will be returned and refreshed with new titles. Other languages are also available so talk to the staff if you have a specific language request.
Readers can also find a wide range of community language and bi-lingual picture books in the downstairs Children’s Area of the library in the “World” tub. If you need assistance just ask any of our friendly staff.
The new Junior Non-fiction Hot Picks collection has centralised many popular subjects that are often lost among the Adult Non-Fiction collection on Level 1. Based on the very popular Junior Science Collection on Level 0 this new location will make it easy for our young readers to feed their thirst for knowledge.
For those with an inquisitive child in their lives, one who loves the zany, the quirky or the just-plain weird, the Junior Non-fiction Hot Picks could be just the ticket.
It turns out fact is much stranger than fiction, and this collection has the books to prove it. It includes the Horrible Histories, Ripley's Believe It or Not, the Guinness World Records publications and books on pets, gardening, jokes and magicians’ tricks.
Library membership is free and if you are not already a member of the library, now is a great time to join. Members can borrow up to 50 items at a time, access free Wi-Fi, download e-books, movies and music, and take home DVDs, magazines, books, and a whole lot more.
