Nyekiah said she was “very excited” to have received the honour at the ceremony on Thursday, in recognition of Indigenous students’ achievements throughout the school year.
Wagga’s Aboriginal Education Consultative Group president Mark Cunningham said the awards, in their 16th year, recognised students from a range of areas.
“It’s important to be recognised by the indigenous community and have a chance to celebrate,” Mr Cunningham said.
With a new Police Community Award launched at this year’s event, Mr Cunningham said the awards encouraged students to get involved and lead their peers.
With more than 360 primary school and 100 high school students in attendance, Mr Cunningham said there was no shortage of achievements. “The kids felt very proud – you can see the smiles on their faces,” he said.
“I think you can see how overwhelmed they feel when they walk onto the stage.”
