Sutherland broke through for her first win at Canberra on Tuesday night when she combined with Gary Lang’s Flaneur.
In a thrilling finish, the pair flashed home out wide to take a memorable victory.
“It was incredible and no words can explain it to be honest,” Sutherland said.
“I wasn’t going to stop until I got the winner that is for sure.”
Sutherland wasn’t quite sure she got there in time.
“Every time I asked him he gave me a good feel and around the corner he fired,” she said.
“I didn’t have to ask a lot and about halfway down the straight he just kept running and I though ‘oh my God I could nearly win this’.
“Past the line I wasn’t sure and couldn’t hear anything and I got back waiting for the number to pop up and when it did it was a thrill you don’t get very often.”
In a twist, her father Trevor Sutherland and boyfriend Matt Harrington had to settle for second.
However the 19-year-old didn’t think beating them made the win any more special.
“It is just a good experience having everyone there and everyone being involved,” she said. “At the end of the day it is more of a fun thing to beat each other and the win was just a good thing for everyone.”
She is also thankful for Lang to give her the chance to get that first win.
“It is good to have trainers like Gary support drivers like me,” Sutherland said.
“I don’t get a lot of opportunity but trainers like him who are the same as us, battlers, when they give you an opportunity and it pays off it is a good feeling.”
