Dr Harrison said broad-brimmed hats offered better sun protection than caps, which left could leave necks, ears and faces exposed to the sun.
His comments come during National Skin Cancer Action Week.
Dr Harrison says avoiding sunburn was important not only for children, but for everyone throughout their lives, and reinterated the importance of regularly re-applying sunscreen.
“Make an appointment with your GP just for a skin check. Get the GP to take a good look from the soles of your feet to the top of your head,” he said.
Dr Harrison said two out of three Australians are likely to have some sort of skin cancer during their lifetime.
