The Bureau of Meteorology at 2.30pm warned severe thunderstorms would strike Wagga and Griffith on Thursday afternoon.
It said a slow-moving trough lying across parts of the state was generating “unstable conditions”, with heavy rainfall likely to cause flash flooding.
State Emergency Service region controller Jon Gregory advised city residents to stay indoors, where possible, during storms.
He said wind gusts could often lift trampolines and outdoor furniture through the air, which was the reason items needed to be secured ahead of time.
“It’s common sense,” Mr Gregory said.
“Move your car away from the cover of trees, keep clear of storm drains, don’t walk, ride or drive through flood water and don’t go anywhere near fallen power lines.”
