An overwhelming 66% of voters in online poll by The Daily Advertiser said the two local leagues should play one another.
Farrer League officials called for the fixture and their belief that it would spark widespread interest in representative football appears to have hit the mark.
The second highest option in the poll – for Farrer and Riverina Leagues to play Victorian opposition – received just 14% of the vote.
Nine percent of respondents said they should play other regional NSW opposition such as the Black Diamond and Hume Leagues.
Seven percent suggested dropping representative football altogether while just three percent voted for the local leagues to take on the best of AFL Sydney or AFL Canberra.
In the past two years, Riverina have lost to AFL Canberra and Hume League but previously had wins against Victoria’s Tallangatta and Picola in 2015 and 2014, and an AFL Sydney development team in 2013.
In the same five years, the Farrer League has played Ovens and King twice, for a win and a loss, had a win against Picola, and two losses to the Black Diamond League.
