The Riverina Cricket Zone awards dinner was held in Albury on Sunday with three special awards handed out.
Coolamon’s Ellie Dalgarno-Fixter took out the Neil Mackay Medal as the best female junior cricketer in the Riverina.
One of the highlights of Ellie Dalgarno-Fixter’s season was her efforts for ACT/Country NSW in the under 18s national championships.
She finished the tournament with 12 wickets at an average of 12.25.
Sam Stening won the Wayne Bradley Medal as the best under 14s cricketer.
The Wagga RSL junior played in the under 14 state challenge and comes after he won the best bowling award for the under 14s competition at the Wagga cricket awards night
Another Bulldogs junior also took out the under 16s nod with Josh Staines named as the Warren Smith Medal for the past season.
Staines represented in the Bradman Cup, for NSW Combined High Schools as well as playing first grade for RSL.
He’s since gone on to compete in the under 17s national championships where he captained ACT/Country NSW.
Staines has also been named as captain of the Riverina team to play in the NSW Country Championships at Tamworth.
He’ll be joined by Wagga City pair Max Harper and Harry Rosengren in the side to play next month.
The 16-year-old has also been selected to play in the CHS first XII team in March.
While Wagga RSL are yet to win a game in the Wagga competition, the wicketkeeper batsman is hoping their batting woes will soon be a thing of the past.
“It has been going alright,” Staines said. “We haven’t been getting the results as a club but we will hang in there and keep going.”
He’ll also play at the Sydney Cricket Ground next month as part of the Wagga Sloggers Regional Bash campaign.
