Shoppers and businesses alike were left temporarily confused when the lights and power cut out just after 5pm.
Essential Energy spokeswoman Karen Roscoe said, the blackout was unplanned.
“Our network protection equipment activated at the Morrow Street zone substation just after 5pm to isolate supply to the area, after it detected a fault on the local electricity network.
“Power was re-routed around the network to progressively backfeed supply to all customers by 5.40pm,” Ms Roscoe said.
The cause of the power outage is now being investigated.
