FLORELLE has only been in Damien Lappin’s stable for a couple of months, but taking a punt on her paid off in a big way on Thursday afternoon.

The $8 fancy ran down heavily backed favourite Cash Crisis in race six at Albury, the Birdcage Albury Fashion Boutique Open Handicap (1175m), to claim a first-up win and deny Craig Widdison a second victory for the day, after the Wodonga trainer found success in race two with Wyangle.

The win, Lappin’s third as a trainer and first since October last year, came with plenty of emotion.

A jubilant Lappin said he was thankful for the support he’d received from Florelle’s owners.

“I’m over the moon, she’s owned by a couple of really good friends of mine, and it means a lot to me that I can repay them for the trust they’ve shown in me,” he said.

“They’ve given me a lot of support over the years.”

With only a couple of runs under her belt after a spell, Lappin said he hoped Florelle would continue to improve.
