Townsend told The Daily Advertiser last week that he would be at Punt Road in 2018 but was still finalising the details, including the duration of his new deal.
Richmond have locked the 24-year-old premiership star in on for 12 months but hinted there may be more opportunities down the track.
“Jacob played a significant role for the team in all our finals games, none more so than the Grand Final,” Tigers General Manager – Football Talent, Dan Richardson, said.
“He is a strong competitor and, having found his niche up forward, we expect he will continue to build on this in 2018 and beyond.”
Townsend spent most of the year in the VFL, claiming the Liston Trophy as the best and fairest, before a call-up in round 22 led to his finals – and grand final – fairytale.
After kicking six goals in his first senior game for 2017, Townsend added another 10 in his next four, including two in the grand final victory.
