Taking a stance against the “prevalent issue”, TAFE’s south region campuses officially earned a White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation this week.
It comes amid a domestic violence scourge across the Riverina, with incidences a daily occurrence, according to Wagga police.
Regional general manager Kerry Penton said the accreditation – awarded at a ceremony in Wagga on Thursday – was more than a piece of paper. She said it was about keeping a conversation going, education staff and students across the board.
“We have thousands of students,” Ms Penton said “We can educate and influence.”
She said it was a testament to how strongly TAFE communities felt about domestic violence.
“This is a major social issue,” she said. “We are a large org and a public provider ... We have a social obligation to assist with these issues, to work with our own staff and to influence the community.
“That’s important to me.”
It follows almost 18 months of comprehensive development and training to create safer and more respectful workplaces, according to Ms Penton.
“We’ve got policies and procedures in place for staff,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of resources in place to support our own students.”
