Councillor Funnell has been charged with one count of intimidation after confronting a drover at his Collingullie property about 10.30am on Sunday, October 8.
Speaking with The Daily Advertiser on Thursday afternoon, Cr Funnell said he would “vigorously” defend himself in court.
“An alleged incident took place at my property with drover’s live cattle that were not meant to be there,” Cr Funnell said.
“I passionately asked the drover to remove cattle from my property and there was an exchange of words between blokes.”
Cr Funnell said he had been a fierce advocate for landholders rights throughout his career in public office.
Council general manager James Bolton confirmed Cr Funnell had notified him of the incident in question and that no action would be taken against the councillor at this stage.
“At this point in time and with the information available there is no requirement for any further action,” Mr Bolton said.
Cr Funnell told The Daily Advertiser none of his positions of public office would be affected by the charge, a sentiment echoed by Riverina Local Land Services chairman Barney Hyams.
“We’ve received confirmation that our elected board member, Paul Funnell, is facing a police charge,” Mr Hyams said.
“However, under the presumption of innocence, Mr Funnell will be free to continue to fulfil his duties with RLLS until further notice.”
Cr Funnell said a court date had tentatively been set for November 22.
