When Abby Wood got sick it turned her life upside down.
The now 14-year-old ended up in Westmead Children’s hospital for almost a year in 2014 with chronic reflux.
Abby was born with the condition but it escalated and put her in hospital.
However, it wasn’t just her life that was impacted by her hospital stay. Her family, friends and school were all involved during the next year.
It doesn’t end there with the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) also involved along the way.
Doctors were able to use information from other research cases to treat Abby.
It took time but treatment eventually worked and saw Abby come home to Wagga.
Despite having to manage her condition for the rest of her life she is in high spirits.
“I would have it when I’m 80 anyway,” she joked.
During her time in hospital her school was flexible and had work sent to her to complete and send back.

This meant she kept up with all her work and was able to go straight back into class with her friends when she came back to Wagga.
There are countless stories similar to Abby’s with many families in Wagga impacted reinforcing the need to raise money for CMRI here in Wagga.
Every year the CMRI Christmas Fair raises thousands of dollars which makes a huge difference when it comes to research.
“Just one dollar can save a child’s life through a genetics test,” CMRI Wagga Fundraising committee member Fiona Hamilton said.
This year the Wagga CMRI Christmas Fair will be held on Friday October 27 and Saturday October 28.
There will be plenty of new products on offer with 101 stalls booked in with one third of those stalls having never been in Wagga before.
Stalls will feature women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, antiques, jewelry, leather goods, handmade items, shoes, hats, plants and more.
A lot of thought goes into selecting the stalls with a stalls committee dedicated to making sure there are new and interesting stalls each year.
Shop til you drop with the market open 10am to 5pm Friday and 9am to 4pm Saturday. Entry is $5 for adults.
