Wagga’s largest tournament is usually held over the October long weekend, but this year’s running has delayed due to a mistake.

Jim Elphick Tennis Centre co-ordinator Matthew Hort described the need to move the event as a “blunder”.

“The committee didn’t re-apply so it was a bit of a blunder in the sanctioning of the tournament,” Hort said.

“We got a little stuck but at least have managed to get a sanctioned tournament.”

Now it will be held over November 25 and 26.

However unlike it previous additions, this year’s tournament will no be classified as a White Money Tournament.

Hort expects that change will have an impact on the quality of players who will participate.

“The only difference is it is a non-ranking tournament,” he said. “The quality of player may lead more towards a social player but in a better sense we should be able to see more locals enter, which will be good.”

With summer approaching, it is a busy time for the club.

The Saturday morning junior competition started last week with Hort pleased with the number of children participating.

There has also been a rise in open tennis numbers during the week, especially Wednesday night mixed doubles and the ladies on Monday nights.
