Nicholls, 27, signed a one-year deal with the Rabbitohs this week.
The prop or second rower has played 28 NRL games.
Nine of them were last season for the Storm, his only year in Melbourne.
Before that he played 19 games for Canberra, including 12 straight, two of those finals, after making his debut in round 17 in 2012.
Rabbitohs coach Anthony Seibold said he was delighted to have Nicholls joining the squad next season.
"Mark is a big body in the middle of the field and he will add depth to our middles," Seibold said.
"He's coming to us from a good system in Melbourne where he played a fair bit of footy off the bench for them this year and he played first grade at the Raiders under David Furner so we know what he is capable of as a player.
"He will add quality and experience to our middles for next season and it's great to have Mark coming on board at South Sydney."
