In 2015/2016 there were 356 new dwellings constructed in Wagga alone.
“At a conservative average cost of build of $300,000 per dwelling, this equates to over $106 million, just through new home construction to the Wagga economy,” HIA Wagga Branch chairman Glenn Sewell said.
"Spread the number of new home constructions to Griffith, Tumut, Temora, Junee and the number increases.
“Add in existing home renovation work and that number climbs even higher again.”
This makes the building industry one of the biggest in Wagga.
“The building industry is so important not only for our clients who engage us to build for them, but in employment, economics and the prosperity of the cities we live in,” Mr Sewell said.
“The Wagga Wagga City Council 2016 economic snapshot reveals construction as Wagga’s fourth largest value add industry at 8.3 per cent and Wagga’s sixth largest employment industry at 7.3 per cent.”
The HIA Wagga Branch is vital when it comes to keeping on top of issues in the industry and liaising with builders. The committee is made up of volunteers who give their time to improve the industry.
All the work done by the group is vital to the industry and just this year the committee have:
- Hosted an economic luncheon which attracted a broad cross-section of related industries
- Written a 52 page detailed submission to the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy
- Commissioning the annual Land Monitor Report
- Organised a successful golf day with almost $1000 donated to Riverina Cancer Care Centre
- Organise industry information nights on a broad range of subjects
- General member representation
“I am proud to chair a group of passionate and hardworking committee members who dedicate their time voluntarily for the benefit of our industry,” Mr Sewell said.
