As Wagga youngsters find ways to keep amused during the break from formal lessons, one group of children have been learning more about the ancient art of weaving.

Fiona Durman from Ashculme Textiles offers school holiday classes for children aged five years and older.

The youngsters are able to choose their own wool to weave on looms into wall hangings.

Ms Durman started Ashculme Textiles with her mother Roswitha Spence, a former costume cutter from the UK, who has spun, woven, designed, sewn and quilted in her spare time.

They have their own flock of eight alpacas, the yarn from which is used in their weaving.

Although they still use some sheep’s wool, they aim to eventually use only fibre from their own alpacas.

“I’ve always loved textile crafts, so went about working out what I could do with those lustrous soft coats,” Ms Durman said.
