Playing for Ovens and Murray in the 16 and under competition, Rex Gallaher, Kolby McMahon, Doug de Jong, Sebastian Brown and Brody Oliver suffered heavy losses in their first three games on Monday and Tuesday.
The combined Wagga and Albury side lost to Drummoyne Devils 9-0, Adelaide Jets 28-2 and UNSW Wests Magpies 20-2.
But coach Brendan Shumack said his youngsters would be much better for the experience.
“It’s a real eye opener and a great experience to see what the top level looks like, especially for our younger kids,” he said.
“Experiencing something like this is vastly different to the local competition and that’s invaluable.”
While their early results rule them out of competing in the Championship Group Finals, the local side will likely compete in the Shield Group Finals following a crossover round robin competition.
Meanwhile, Wagga’s Sophie McLeod and Lauren Nugent are gearing up for the corresponding girl’s competition, which kicks off in Hobart on Wednesday.
