The white Isuzu D-MAX Ute was believed to have been stolen sometime between 7pm and 8pm on Sunday.
Responding to the robbery, police conducted a patrol of the Ashmont area when they discovered the car shortly after 9pm, which had been set on fire on nearby Jack Misson Oval, off Malta Crescent.
“The vehicle had been totally destroyed by fire,” Police Inspector Peter McLay said.
Considering the weekend’s wild winds, Inspector McLay said the fire could have been much worse.
“Fortunately on this occasion the fire didn’t spread any further than the vehicle,” he said. “We get spates (of) these from time to time and it generally only involves a small number of individuals, so our target is always to lock those persons up.”
