Co-coach Andrew Baggio says it was traditionally a challenge to assemble a lineup in the immediate aftermath of the various football finals, let alone getting the team fully firing once the team has formed.
As a result, the side takes the approach that establishing a connection on the field comes first, believing results will naturally follow.
That will be their mentality when they take on the Casuals at Jubilee Park on Tuesday night.
“We’re definitely not settled yet,” Baggio said.
“So we just want to keep things simple to start with and not worry too much about the scoreline for now.
“We tend to lose our way when we throw it around too much early on and we’ll sacrifice a few losses if it gets us on the right path.
“If we can just get through to Christmas, then hopefully we can string it together.
“It’s just about getting through that early period and then the competition really kicks into full swing from there.”
The Cobra’s upcoming opponents, the Casuals, are loaded with rugby league talent and Baggio said his men would have a fight on their hands.
“We haven’t seen them this season but I expect them to be a young and fast sort of team.
“I expect they’ll be good across the park.”
In the other men’s game, Katana Security Wizards will take on Quolls.
In the women’s competition, Young Guns coach Mark Wade said his side would have its hands full with AKW Jets.
“They’re skillful, well drilled and they’re probably the team to beat,” he said.
Wade said his aptly named team - which does not feature a player above the age of 16 - would need to turn around its sluggish start to the season, having lost to Don Tuckwell’s Audio 9-2 in round one following minimal preseason preparation.
“We usually start much better because we normally train for four to six weeks before the start of the season,” he said.
“But this year netball and Aussie Rules commitments threw everything out, so we’re coming in underdone.
“You could really see the difference not having that pre season training made in our first game of the season a couple of weeks ago.”
Wade said the performances of potent duo Ella McFarlane and Gabby O'Connell would be particularly important in claiming the victory.
In other top-flight women's action, Bar Up Bullbars will battle Don Tuckwell's Audio.
