The woman approached the man pushing a trolley with “several hundreds of dollars worth” of Woolworths groceries and asked to see receipts after suspecting they hadn’t been paid for.
“The male became quite irate and pushed the trolley towards the female staff member,” Inspector Peter McLay said.
“The incident escalated to a point where other persons had to come to the staff member’s aid,” he said.
Police allege that another male and a female attempted to help the man, resulting in, “a bit of a scuffle”, before the three ran off, leaving the groceries behind.
The man is described as being aged in his 20s to 30s of Aboriginal appearance.
“It’s quite a concerning incident, one which this staff member certainly was just trying to do the right thing to try and prevent someone from stealing from the store and she’s become involved in quite a nasty incident,” Inspector McLay said.
“There is a sense of entitlement some people think they have that they can simply walk into a store and walk out … and not have to pay for them, so it just beggars belief to be honest.”
