Despite the malfunction, nothing could deter David Warby and his team, as they returned to the place his father Ken set the current world water speed record, twice.
Ken managed to set the first record in November 1977 at a speed of 464.46 km/h, before returning in 1978 to set the current mark of 511km/h, remaining the only man alive who can make the claim.
NSW Maritime Boat Safety Officer Jim Canning said the team did all they could during what was a mixed bag of a day.
“It’s all very positive, whenever you’re doing these trials you take the risks with the weather and mechanical problems,” Mr Canning said.
“It was still a great day and we still have about 150 people here at the moment watching.”
Mr Canning said the team was originally aiming to attempt the record on November 18 or 19, but the date was now unlikely.
