A big contingent of Bombers were tuned in from their footy trip at Airlie Beach to cheer home the Mark Hagar-trained gelding.
Son Josh captained Marrar’s drought-breaking premiership on Saturday while Doc Hosen Berry made it two wins from his last two starts with a narrow victory in a Menangle Country Series heat.
His father was just pleased to keep the party going.
“They would be having a good time now the boys,” Hagar said.
Doc Hosen Berry ($4.60) was given the perfect trip, sitting just off the pace, before finding clear running in the straight to run down Doctor Feld ($3.90) to win by a head.
Hagar thought it was just what he needed.
“He can follow speed,” he said.
“We haven’t been able to lead on him yet but who wants to lead when you can get the sit and get the luck?”
A late nomination meant the nine-year-old was an emergency at Leeton last week.
However he got the run he needed and made the most of it, going on to bring up his fifth career win.
Hagar believes luck has been on his side of late.
He’s hoping it continues for another crack at the lucrative final next weekend.
“Sammy Hewitt had had for a bit and got him going really well,” Hagar said.
“He’s qualified for one of those (finals) before when they run the heat at Young and went 56.9 and he got beat four metres and in the final he run his first half in 55 and Sam said he was sitting up travelling nice.
“He ended up getting beat nine metres and went 54 himself.”
The nine-year-old shows no signs of slowly down.
Despite his years he’s still relatively inexperienced, only having the 22 starts.
Hagar is confident there is plenty of good racing left in him.
“I had him going earlier then I got crook and he was in the paddock for the best part of three years probably and then I got him going, gave him a few more runs and he got crook,” he said.
“He was out for another 12 months and by the time that gets going he’s nine-year-old now.
“I always thought he would be alright.
“He’s showed a little bit when he was younger.”
Doc Hosen Berry just stopped Junee reinsman Cameron Hart from picking up an early treble.
He’d already won with Luvumum for Jake Stockton and Turbo Bromac for Shane Hillier but just got swamped on the line.
Hillier also scored with Miss Peabody.
It was her first victory since 2014.
