The first exam – an English paper – will be held on Monday, October 16.
According to Matt Land, a psychologist from Headspace, balance could be the key to surviving the HSC.
Mr Land emphasised the importance of study and preparation, and also of making time for breaks, catching up with friends, eating well and getting enough sleep.
He suggested students take some time to plan out how they plan to study, and factor in regular breaks every hour or so.
“Even if that break is just five minutes to go a get a glass of water, it’s important,” Mr Land said.
He said the lead-up to the exams was a good time to say no to parties and to avoid alcohol and drugs.
Turning off the mobile phone and ignoring emails could also help, along with creating a quiet, well-organised study space.
When it came to actually studying, Mr Land had some tips.
He suggested students read or write everything three times, as this would help them commit the relevant information to memory.
Mr Land also suggested students information within 24 hours of the relevant exam to help retain more details.
“Trial exam results can help focus in on what you need to study and using previous exam papers can give you a feel for what to expect,” he said.
“Students shouldn’t forget the can ask for support from teachers and school.”
Of course, he said, an organisation like Headspace also offered support in a variety of forms, from its website to its professional staff. Visit the website.
