The Canberra-based footballer is awaiting the birth of his child and will not travel to Narrandera Sportsground if the baby has not arrived by Saturday.
His wife Jessica is a week overdue and Irwin will not make the four-hour trip if the baby has not arrived.
“It’s one of those things. As much as there is a fire inside to win this, it’s still realistically, it’s my child,” Irwin said.
“I’m not going to risk missing the birth of my child. God forbid, if there was any complications while the birth was taking place, I wouldn’t forgive myself.”
Irwin was still named in the Crows team on Thursday night and coach Jade Hodge is prepared to give him until the last possible minute.
“We’ve given him until the very last minute,” Hodge said.
“We’ll make that decision when it comes. It’s not (ideal) but if one bloke misses out, we’ve got another who will step in. Obviously Neil is a fantastic player and very important to our side but I’m sure we can step up and cover him if need be.”
Meantime, Collingullie-Glenfield Park swung a selection surprise on Thursday night by including defender Justin Simmons in their team.
Simmons played his last game for the Demons in the final round win over Wagga Tigers before moving to Queensland for his employment in the Army.
He was thought to be gone for the year but will fly back for the grand final.
