FWW only has three referees capable of officiating Pascoe Cup games locked in for next season, was already shorthanded with six this year, and would ideally have a rotation of nine.
“At the moment we just don’t have enough referees to cover the five Pascoe Cup games,” McKenzie said.
“We’re having to stagger games with Saturday night fixtures on top of Sunday afternoons, while asking existing officials to back up for two or three games at a time.
“It’s a bad situation to be in.”
McKenzie said FWW was also focused on bolstering its female refereeing ranks, pointing to the all-female crews which officiated the Leonard Plate and Leonard Cup grand finals as an encouraging sign.
“To have something like that on display was pretty special,” he said.
Anyone interested in becoming a referee should contact FWW.
