The Category One Grasslands tanker has taken up residence at the RFS Glenfield Park base at a cost of $329,000.
Riverina Zone Fleet Officer Rex Sheather said the new tankers will make fighting fires much more effective and safer for crews.
“These new trucks have radiant heat curtains, plus safety sprays over the wheels and the pumpers, and a ring spray to cover the cabin giving a water shield if they get too close to the fire,” Mr Sheather said.
Equipped to carry 3,500 litres of water, the new tanker carries up to six firefighters, and can deploy water and foam jets with the flick of a switch inside the cabin.
Two more tankers will arrive this week; for Mangoplah, and Marinna on the Olympic Highway near Junee, near the grain silo.
“These tankers are so modern, one person could technically put out a fire using the controls," he said.
