Rob, who didn’t want to give his surname, was out for a morning ride on Willans Hill around 7am, when he heard the distinct cracking sound of a KTM engine around 30-metres away.

“I was riding through the Botanical Gardens when I heard a motorbike coming up one of the tracks,” said cyclist Rob.

“Turned around about 30 metres away and I noticed it was my friend Terace’s motorcycle,”

Rob called out to the rider to stop before a chase resulted over rough terrain, lasting several minutes.

“I caught up to him as he was trying to make a jump, then his back wheel was clipped and he fell off,” cyclist Rob said.

“I told him I knew the bike was stolen last Sunday night, I know Terace’s bike because I’ve worked on it many times, and he proceeded to tell me his name was Jared and his cousin had sold it to him,” he recalled.

He ran off towards Mount Austin, leaving Rob to wheel both motorbike and pushbike 800 metres to the park entrance.

Rob flagged down another cyclist and used his phone to call his friend, and the police, who quickly arrived at the scene.

“The fella fell off and I can’t believe it, I got my bike back,” 

“Same as what it was minus the stickers, I guess ‘cause they want to disguise it, but yeah, it’s good,” a grateful Terace Bert said.

When asked how he managed to out-peddle a fleeing KTM, Rob says even he doesn’t know how he did it, especially over the rugged terrain.

“Maybe it was the adrenalin, but I knew it was the only chance I had to get that bike back for Terace,” Rob said.

Police are investigating the incident and hope to make an arrest.
