One of the men involved was holding a five-day-old baby.
Police were called to the Equex Centre on Saturday, shortly after noon.
A witness – who wished to remain anonymous – recalled the nightmare that unfolded.
The witness claimed the man holding the infant initially spat in the other assailant’s face.
The smaller man allegedly reacted, lashing out at the “much bigger” man, who was carrying the child.
The bigger man was heard to say:
“I’m holding a baby. Stop”.
As the smaller man walked away, the father called for reinforcements, reportedly saying:
“This isn’t over”.
The father then allegedly punched the smaller man to the ground, where he lay “for quite some time”.
”People rushed in, including children,” The witness said.
“Onlookers looked to comfort and care for the punched man, while police were called.
The father, who felled the smaller assailant, was heard saying:
“This is all over one thing I posted on Facebook”.
With a group of 14-year-old girls watching the scene unfold, the witness said it was “pretty disturbing” for children to see.
He said the smaller man was able to get up and walk to the ambulance after more than 10 minutes.
“It was bizarre to watch,” he said.
“There’s this guy holding a baby, punching this other guy to the ground.
Wagga police inspector Adrian Telfer said paramedics treated the man at the scene.
He said officers were still investigating the incident.
More to come.
