A 53-year-old man had gone out alone to collect wood on a friend’s property at the weekend when he didn’t return.

The alarm was raised when he was found next to a tree, which had a ladder against it.

It is believed he may have been crushed by a falling branch.

Locals reported seeing a rush of emergency service crews heading to the property.

Despite the skills of ambulance, the fire brigade and police, he was unable to be saved.

News of the man’s death travelled quickly throughout his network of friends with all reacting in shock. 

It’s understood the man had visited his friend’s property over the years to collect firewood and this visit was nothing out of the ordinary.

Wagga Police Superintendent Bob Noble said the matter is now before the coroner.

Superintendent Noble said there were no witnesses in what appears to be a tragic accident but police are investigating the death.

“The coroner will be doing a thorough investigation, but at this early stage it appears to be a tragic accident, which happened as the man had been out working alone on this part of the property,” Superintendent Noble said.

“Thoughts, of course, are with his family at time.” 

He said it is a reminder to property owners to exercise caution when working outdoors.

“Any physical work can be dangerous,” he said.

“It would appear it was an unfortunate accident that occurred while the gentleman was cutting up firewood,” Superintendent Noble said.

“It does not appear to be a case of misadventure.”

“It’s a sad and tragic reminder … to be extra vigilant when engaged in that sort of work.”

Police confirmed they were investigating the death of a 53-year-old man on Old Narrandera Road.
