The Warriors, who are locked into second place, were not themselves in the absence of Courtney Booth, Abbey Gillogly and prolific striker Anne Noonan.
South Wagga scored the first two goals despite Henwood missing a string of opportunities early on.
Hawks then fired back to take a 3-2 lead behind a Courtney Schmid brace and a goal to Gemma Berto.
But South Wagga managed a late equaliser within the final 15 minutes.
Biola Dawa and Phillipa Skinner were among the goal scorers for Warriors.
“I thought it was one of our best performances of the year,” Henwood Park coach Peter Adams said.
“I’ve told the girls that the sign of a good team is not how it plays in the good times, but how it responds in the bad times.”
Henwood now sits just two points behind fourth-placed Wagga United.
South Wagga coach Marty Cutler said his side was not troubled by the result, due to already being locked into second spot.
Meanwhile, Tolland downed Wagga United 4-1.
Bernadette Blake starred for Wolves with a hat-trick.
Teammate Sam Gross picked up a knee injury, with the severity yet to be determined. Cootamundra downed Young 6-1, while Leeton forfeited its clash with Junee.
