The Murrumbidgee region has more men diagnosed annually with prostate cancer than any other in NSW, with 9,254 projected new cases and 1,140 expected deaths in the state this year.
Wagga’s dual rugby representative, Arthur Summons, was on hand on Monday to accept a signed Australian rugby league team Anzac test match jersey from lunch day sponsors, Coca Cola, Carlton, De Bortoli Wines and the RSL Club which will be auctioned at the lunch.
Summons urged all sportsmen, but particularly ex-rugby league and rugby players, to heed the message about early detection of prostate cancer and see their GP, especially if there is a history of the disease in the family.
Help can also be obtained from the city’s Prostate Cancer Support Group, another of the lunch sponsors, on 6926 4210.
Prolific-scoring Australian opening batsman, Matt Hayden, the national prostate cancer ambassador, has again given a signed bat for auction at the lunch to be held at the RSL Club on Friday, September 1.
Lunch convener, Andrew Bowcher, has urged supporters who have already reserved tables to finalise bookings at the Commercial Club (6921 3012), which handles the RSL function bookings, as soon as possible.
