The Giants’ reserve grade team will make their annual trip to Wagga to play Canberra Demons in the North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) fixture.
While coach Brad Miller will not know his team until later in the week, a number of GWS’ Riverina footballers are likely to feature.
Leeton’s Jacob Hopper, Wagga’s Harry Himmelberg and Narrandera’s Matt Flynn all played alongside Brett Deledio in the NEAFL last weekend.
Deledio has already been called into the Giants’ AFL team for Saturday’s with Melbourne in Canberra but it is unsure who else may be promoted.
“It’s really hard to know at this stage. Selection starts on Monday and goes right through until the end of the week,” Miller said.
“It’s going to be good to get to Wagga though, we played one game there last year and it’s always a good trip.”
It is almost a homecoming for Miller, too. His father Nev played for Wagga Tigers and still has family in the city.
“I’ve got family there, nan, aunties and cousins so it’s nice for them to be able to come along,” he said.
The Giants are struggling in this year’s NEAFL competition after winning last year’s premiership.
Injuries to their AFL squad have left them to field a large number of underage top up players for the year.
“We’ve been decimated,” Miller said.
“We’ve had our challenges but we had a really good win over Sydney Uni a couple of weeks ago, who have only lost a few games for the year, to show our best footy is good enough.
“We want to finish on a good, positive note. We’ve only got two games left for the year and it’s one of those things where you don’t want to finish on a down.”
The Giants and Canberra Demons will feature on a big day of football on Saturday.
They will slot into the game-day schedule of the Riverina League clash between Wagga Tigers and Griffith.
The NEAFL game will be held at midday, either side of the under 17s and reserve grade Riverina League fixtures.
The senior game between Tigers and Swans is set for 4.30pm.
