While Coolamon and Wagga Tigers do battle on Sunday in a game seen as crucial in the battle for fifth, Turvey Park, in sixth place, are sitting right between them on the ladder.
But they’re a win and considerable percentage behind Tigers and, at this stage, Sykes is more concerned about lapses in concentration than finals calculations.
“We’re definitely confident,” Sykes said.
“When we played them earlier in the year, it was only a 10-minute period that let us down. It’s been the story of our year.”
The Bulldogs led at the first two breaks in round five but the game got away from them in the third quarter.
Closing down the Goannas’ key forwards, Jordan Foster and Dylan de Britt, will be crucial.
“All year our backline has been our strength, and our half-back line is we’re we attack from,” Sykes said. “Jack Brooks has had a good year and Josh Donaldson plays on a guy who’s bigger than him every week. And Andrew Emery has been great for us.”
Sykes says they’re focussing on a game at a time but four premiership points on Saturday would have them in the finals conversation with games against Coolamon and Tigers to come next month.
