Jane Baron retired from her post after 37 years and reflected upon historical and technological change she has seen over the years.
“I started there before the NSW building society took over,” she said.
“The building society then became Advanced Bank, and then St George Bank.”
She didn’t really “understand” technology during the advent of the internet, but always prepared herself for the changing nature of her role.
“When we got internet, I really thought I’d have to pick things up,” Ms Baron said.
“Simple things like how to control a mouse on the computer.
“I did a course at the library and then it all just came from there.”
Working with the team at St George was like having a “second family,” Ms Baron said.
She worked with a variety of customers and thought her familiar face had a calming effect on people who came into the branch.
”I developed a lot of friendships with the customers and through the staff,” she said.
Time flies when you're having fun and “becoming one of those grey nomads,” Ms Baron joked.
“It’s one of those every day things where you don’t see yourself ageing but everyone else does,” she said.
