It is believed the thieves broke into the Turvey Park home that morning, taking the securely stored weapon with them.
Duty officer Maggie Deall said there was no issue with the owner of the gun, only with those who took it.
Acting-Inspector Deall said even though it was not technically a firearm, it could still cause serious injury.
“We treat it the same way,” Inspector Deall said.
“We don’t want any illegal firearms in the community or weapons in the hands of people who aren’t licensed.”
