Hay War Memorial High School’s open girls team took out the state title with an impressive 26-point win over The Scots School Albury in the final at Robertson Oval on Thursday.
Hay survived a threatening start from Albury and finished full of running, winning 4.7 (31) to 0.5 (5).
It capped off a big day after earlier wins over Wagga, Canberra and Leeton schools.
Stand-in Hay coach Jeremy Jolliffe said the girls did the community proud.
“We’re really proud of the girls,” Jolliffe said.
“They started off slow with the first game but then they just got better and better.
“A lot of the girls played junior footy, which does help...and now that the women’s comp has started, it helps them a lot.”
Jollffe said the new AFL women’s competition had proven an inspiration.
“It’s making them want to be the best they can, learn with their coaches and hopefully we can get a few girls that we can watch on the tele in a few years time.”
